Importanza dell'indice glicemico e sue applicazioni cliniche

Abstract

Il diabete mellito, la dislipidemia e l'obesità si sono distinti come malattie altamente diffuse, e quindi estremamente rilevanti negli ultimi tempi, essendo cause di elevata mortalità. Queste malattie condividono la stessa terapia iniziale per un adeguato controllo del paziente, cioè la terapia nutrizionale. Il presente studio si propone di presentare l'importanza dell'adozione del criterio dell'indice glicemico nella dieta di questi pazienti. Sono state consigliate diete a basso contenuto di grassi e ad alto contenuto di fibre e carboidrati complessi, tuttavia alcuni carboidrati possono essere dannosi, in quanto aumentano rapidamente la glicemia postprandiale, generando uno squilibrio metabolico. Per questo motivo è stato studiato l'indice glicemico, in quanto classifica i carboidrati in base alla risposta fisiologica e rivela che gli alimenti a basso indice glicemico producono un miglior controllo del glucosio. Pertanto, l'uso dell'indice glicemico indica benefici sia nella prevenzione che nel trattamento di queste malattie.
