Verify disturbances of body image in relation to body mass index of adolescents, female, enrolled in private schools of Mogi das Cruzes - SP
Abstract
The body image can be defined as a multi dimensional construction of how an individual thinks, feels and behaves in relation to his/her physical attributes. The aim of this work was to verify the degree of teenager corporal image satisfaction, using the nutritional state evaluation (IMC) and applying an adapted scale of corporal satisfaction. The sample is constituted of 39 female teenagers, of average age of 16 years old. After the anthropometric measurement (weight and height) the girls answered a questionnaire about their own silhouettes, the silhouettes they would like to have and the silhouettes they considered to be healthy. From the teenagers researched, 92% presented a nutritional state of “normalcy” and 8% of nutritional state of over weight/obesity. In relation to the weight, 23% are unsatisfied, 33% are satisfied, and 43% are a little satisfied. About the silhouette evaluation, the teenagers demonstrated a great worry about their corporal self-image. Among them, prevailed a corporal Image distortion in the rate of 51.28% to thinners and 48.71% to “normalcy” and an association between nutritional state and corporal satisfaction was detected. With the resultant data of this research, we can conclude that the ideal weight generates an “unsatisfaction” in relation to corporal image, and about the silhouette, the image wished by teenagers do not correspond to the healthy and wished image considered normal patterns by the population.
