Serum vitamin d levels in obesive individuals
Abstract
Introduction: Obesity is characterized by an excess of adipose tissue in the body. Research shows that vitamin D may play an important role in the genesis of obesity as evidenced by epidemiological, genetic and metabolic data. Objective: To perform a literature search on serum levels of Vitamin D in obese individuals. Materials and methods: This is an integrative literature review. To search for and select the studies, the following databases were used: Scielo, Medline, Lilacs and BVS, totaling 10 articles, published between the years 2013 and 2018. Results and discussion: In all studies it was verified that fat accumulation may cause vitamin D deficiency, which was evidenced by the fact that obese individuals present lower serum levels of vitamin D compared to eutrophic. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is an important public health problem in many countries, because its implications are predisposing factor for the emergence of several pathologies.
