Problematizing the practice of breastfeeding in pregnant women attended in health units

Abstract

Breast milk is the ideal food for proper growth and development of the baby. The objective of the study was to problematize the interference of socially conditioned patterns, such as beliefs, myths and taboos about the practice of breastfeeding in pregnant women attending health units in the city of Vera Cruz-RS. The study is cross-sectional, quantitative and qualitative. The convenience sample consisted of 96 pregnant women attending two health units in the prenatal period, in the months from March to April 2015. We used a semi structured questionnaire, covering pregnancy and socioeconomic data, as well as the positive and negative interference on the breastfeeding. For the statistical analysis we applied the chi-square test that analyzes the association between age, number of pregnancies, education, income and myths about breastfeeding. Refer to parity, 52,1% (n=50) reported that they was primigravida and 47,9% (n=46) multigravida; 91,7% (n=88) asserted that the breastfeeding benefits the health of the child or of the woman. Statistically significant results were obtained between number of pregnancies, age and beliefs about breastfeeding. The identification of the myths about breastfeeding allows the formulation of public policies for the educational aspect to facilitate the dissemination of information about the benefits of breastfeeding, and offers mothers instruction on the proper techniques of breastfeeding.
