Abstract

We selected 18 scientific articles published between 1993 and 2006 in various media available for scientific publishing, including newspapers, magazines and websites on resistance training, energy expenditure during and after exercise, resting metabolic rate and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Most of the individuals studied were men (55.5%). Among the items analyzed, all had positive change on human health is the significant reduction in the proportion of fat, or the increase in EPOC, or the elevation of metabolic rate after exercise and at rest, or energy expenditure generated during the sessions of training or by not increase weight or body fat post-training. We used various instruments and protocols for measuring and collecting data while they were: anthropometric assessment (n: 10), indirect calorimetry (n: 7), hydrostatic weight (n: 1), maximum load test (n: 1), bioelectrical impedance (n: 1), doubly labeled water (n: 2), DEXA (n: 1), test VO2 max (n: 1), and examinations of blood lactate (n: 2). The studies presented in this article show that the training of localized muscular resistance has been a great ally in the control and calorie expenditure, lipid oxidation post-training, and especially significant in the low percentage of fat. But the results will be influenced by the type of training used, methods and percentage of maximum load to be used.
