Abstract

In parallel to the epidemic rates of overweight and obesity, there is the popularity of bariatric surgery as an alternative treatment, with the number of procedures growing every year. Aim: To describe a clinical profile of patients eligible for bariatric surgery at a hospital in Manaus (Amazonas, Brazil). Methods: It was evaluated 50 patients included in 6 Bariatric Surgery Program group Adriano Jorge Hospital Foundation (AM, Brazil), through anamnesis and clinical assessment of vital signs. Results: Among the patients, 39 were female and 11 males. Among women, the average age was 35.9 ± 9.0 years, body mass index (BMI) of 51.8 ± 9.4 kg/m². In men, age was 37.8 ± 7.7 and BMI 50.0 ± 5.7. 52% of patients reported having systemic hypertension, while 48% were also diabetics; 98% of these patients were taking medication regularly. Musculoskeletal disorders were present in 18% of subjects. Vital signs measured during the evaluation revealed Blood Pressure (BP) average of 127/88 mm / hg, while heart rate (HR) was 81.2 ± 12.5 bpm and respiratory rate (FR) 19.2 ± 3.6 bpm. Conclusion: This study revealed that the search for bariatric surgery happens for individuals of working age in both sexes, and is also related to the presence of associated diseases such as Hypertension and Diabetes, confirming the multisystem condition of obesity.
