Comparison between models of metabolic syndrome induction: diet with fructose excesso and hyperlipidemic

Abstract

Introduction: The Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a not transmissible chronic disease, associated to cardio metabolic risk factors. It is considered an important menace to the public health due to the association with the increase of the development possibility of Diabetes Mellitus type 2 and cardiovascular disease. There is no proper definition of etiopatogenia, therefore, the search for suitable experimental model to simulate MS is extremely important, which will contribute with the progress in the understanding of the etiology and in the therapeutic interventions of this syndrome. Aim: To compare and validate two MS induction models in Wistar mice. Materials and Methods: 80 Wistar mice with ninety days of life and 200-300g were used. The animals were separated in: control group (n=30), which received normocaloric ration, fructose group (n=30), which received ration with 60% (p/p) of fructose e hyperlipidemic group (n=20) which received a ration with chocolate, cookies and peanuts. Results: Comparing the control and test groups of the diet with fructose, we verified a significant increase of the body mass, glycemia and uric acid inbo th diets compared to the control, as well as significant differences in the levels of triglycerides and glucose levels in the hyperlipidemic diet group than in the fructose group. The rest of the analyzed parameters did not show significant alterations in both diets. Conclusion: Only the hyperlipidemic diet was capable of inducing the MS, by showing variations in three parameters as the diagnostic criterion of NCEP ATPIII, therefore, chosen as the diet for studies about MS.
