Relationship between breakfast type and BMI of patients of a nutrition consultation

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to verify the relationship between breakfast type and BMI of patients of a nutrition consultation room on the South Zone of the city of São Paulo. Methods: Data collection of the patients of a nutrition consultation. Measurements standing height and weight used to calculate body mass index. Foods intake in the breakfast was obtained via a 24-hour dietary recall. Breakfast types were divided into next categories: "Fats and Sweet", "Milk and derivatives", "Meats and Eggs", "Fruit and Vegetable", "Cereals", "Breads", "Cakes and Sweet", "Beverages" and "Without breakfast“. Results: Most patients (47.25%) was included in the category of the Breads, showing a high consumption of the characteristic food of this category. The average of the body mass index found at study present belonged to 27.66 Kg/m². The category "Without breakfast" it is one of the three first with the most elevated BMI, corresponding to an average of 28.36 Kg/m². The individuals who were included in the category "Cereals", were the unique with BMI's average (24.34 ± 3.71 Kg/m²) inside the normality. Conclusion: Individuals who skipping breakfast tend to have BMI larger, therefore not being an effective habit for the individuals who intend to lose weight. The cereals source food consumption during this meal can be associated to BMI smaller.
