Lifestyle change of academics in period of social isolation
Abstract
Introduction: With the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic occurred that changed the world in several ways. Social distancing was one of the alternatives in an attempt to reduce the contagion and reduce hospital overcrowding; however, it also brought some problems to the population's health. Objective: To evaluate lifestyle changes after the COVID-19 pandemic in students at a private university in the south of Brazil. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study, approved by the ethics and research committee, using an online questionnaire to assess changes in diet, sleep and physical activity in students at a private university in the south of the country. Socioeconomic, demographic, and anthropometric data were collected. Lifestyle change was assessed using the (Kumari and collaborator, 2020) questionnaire. Results: Among the students evaluated, 79 (59.8%) had worsened lifestyle, while 45 (34.1%) had improved and 8 (6.1%) maintained their lifestyle as in the pre-pandemic period. There was a significant increase in body mass index values between the pre and post pandemic periods (23.8 ± 4.6 versus 24.2 ± 4.7 kg/m2; p=0.049). The main positive changes were associated with the habit of cooking at home and increased consumption of fruits and vegetables; while the negative changes were higher food consumption, especially of sweets. Conclusion: Social isolation resulted in positive and negative changes in the students' lifestyles, and most of them worsened their lifestyles.
