Abstract

Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine dysfunction that affects women of childbearing age and is characterized by several symptoms such as hyperandrogenism, irregular menstrual cycle, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, among others. Vitamin D deficiency may be related to an increase in the symptoms characteristic of the syndrome. Objective: The aim of the study was to present information about vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of PCOS. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative review of the literature, which considered studies between 2017 and 2022, in the English language, from the Google Scholar and PubMed/MedLine databases. The PRISMA flowchart was used to select articles; Jadad scale for scoring and the PICO strategy for identifying the research question. Results: The studies analyzed demonstrate that vitamin D supplementation alone or co-supplemented provides improvement in insulin resistance, fasting blood glucose, androgen hormones, hirsutism, cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides, reduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH), normalization or improvement the regularity of menstruation, in addition to reductions in inflammatory markers. Discussion: Studies that used dosages of 50,000 IU over a period of two to three months showed better effects regarding the implications associated with the syndrome. Conclusion: However, further studies are still needed to provide further clarification regarding the ideal dosage, as well as the best supplementation method for PCOS symptoms.
