Overweight and obesity prevalence in children of six eight years from education network of Schroeder-SC
Abstract
Introduction: infant obesity becomes a problem of major proportions every day. It’s a issue of concern, because of the morbidity related to it. Objective: establish the overweight and obesity prevalence in children of six eight years from education network of Schroeder-SC. Materials and methods:483 infants were studied. Overweigh was defined as body mass index (BMI) equal or above the 85th percentile and obesity was defined as BMI equal or above the 97th percentile for age and gender, according to the news curves of WHO (2007). Results:12.63% of children (10.25% male and 15.06% female) are overweightand 11.8% (13.52% male and 10.04% female) are obese. While the prevalence of overweight is higher in females, the prevalence of obesity is higher in males. Discussion: the values found are below than those observed in other studies. Conclusion: although the numbers found in this research were below those observed in other studies, is a significant value that must be reflected as replicate the national trend of childhood obesity.
