Central obesity and physical inactivity among students of physical education of an Institution of High Education
Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the association between central obesity and physical inactivity among school students in physical education from an institution of higher education. This is a cross-sectional study is a descriptive, conducted among 56 students, conducted during November and December 2010 at a tertiary institution in the state of Bahia. We used a questionnaire on sociodemographic information, level of physical activity (IPAQ -Short Version) and assessment of height and waist measurements to evaluate coronary risk. Data analysis software was used Epidata 3.1 and data analysis using SPSS 9.0. The average age of respondents ranged from 18 to 29 years, 53.6% (n = 30) female42.9% (n = 24) black and 94.6% have no children. The overall prevalence of physical inactivity was 53.6%. Women had a lower prevalence of physical inactivity among men. Regarding WHeR, coronary risk index, 1.8% are at risk, with the highest prevalence among women (3.4%). When analyzing the association between physical inactivity and waist / height (WHeR) was not statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05). It is recommended to conduct further studies in order to better establish this association.
