Physical activity level and cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus: response in lipid profile
Abstract
Objective: to analyze the relationship between regular physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and lipid profile of adolescents with type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM1). Materials and Methods: 32 adolescents with DM1 (age: 13.1±1.9) selected intentionally participated. The lipid profile, anthropometry and composition (DEXA), physical activity level (PAL) and cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) were evaluated. The data were analyzed using the software and SPSS, adopting an alpha error of 5% for statistical significance. Results: There was a significant difference for fat percentage with higher values for girls (p=0.192) and higher VO2max values for boys (p=0.001), divided into groups (active and sedentary) there was a significant difference in the variables moderate physical activity vigorous (MVPA) and p=0.002, triglycerides (TG) and p=0.024 VO2max (p=0.018). A negative and moderate correlation was also observed between MVPA and TG (p= - 0.018), a positive and moderate correlation between MVPA and VO2max (p=0.452), a negative and strong correlation between VO2max and total fat (p= -0.856), negative and moderate between VO2max and TG (p= -0.527). Conclusion: There is an inverse relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness, TG and total fat percentage in adolescents with DM1. As for PAL, physically active adolescents had better lipid levels, better body composition and VO2max compared to sedentary ones.
