Perception of body image in individuals after bariatric surgery and its relationship with eating disorders
Abstract
Introduction and objective: Obesity is a chronic not transmissible disease, considered a world epidemic by the World Health Organization. Bariatric surgery (BC) is an alternative treatment for obesity. Besides the physical impacts, obesity also has a psychological impact, which reflects negatively on the individual’s life and may persist or intensify after surgery. The present study aimed to analyze the perception and satisfaction of body image of individuals after bariatric surgery. Materials and methods: this is a cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive research, whose collection was performed online using Google Forms. The perception and satisfaction regarding body image were investigated through the Silhouettes Scale for Obesity Surgery. The data were submitted to descriptive analyses for the characterization of the study population, a Correlation Matrix was performed, and a 5% significance level was considered. Discussion: According to the Brazilian Society of BC and Metabolic, more than 70% of BCs performed in Brazil are done in women, with a average between 35 and 50 years. Results and conclusion: The studied population was predominantly female (90,2%) and the average was 37,8 years, as for the perception of body image, 29,4% of the participants classified themselves with a BMI lower than the current calculed one, on the other hand, 70,6% perceived themselves with a BMI higher than the one they actually had. Patients undergoing BC remain dissatisfied with their body image and demonstrate risk behavior for eating disorders.
