Level of depression and variables related to health in university students
Abstract
Introduction: Given the new responsibilities of entering higher education, academics tend to adopt an inadequate lifestyle, which can directly affect their mental health and develop depressive symptoms. Objective: To evaluate depressive symptoms and relate them to the level of physical activity in students of physical education, physiotherapy and dentistry courses at a public university in the city of Jacarezinho, Paraná. Materials and Methods: It was a cross-sectional analytical study, conducted with 110 university students. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied through the Google Forms tool and disseminated through WhatsApp. In this questionnaire, the subject filled out information regarding gender, age, body mass, height, course and year of graduation. In addition to these, the levels of depression were evaluated through the Back-II Depression Inventory and the levels of physical activity, by the short version IPAQ. Data analysis was performed using SPSS, version 27.0. Results: It was observed that within the female sex had higher depressive levels, compared to their peers. No significant difference was identified between the courses, however it can be observed that physiotherapy students fill a higher percentage of severe depressive level (17.6%). Regarding the level of physical activity, it is observed that the students characterized as irregularly active or inactive, have a higher depressive level. Conclusion: The level of physical activity is an important variable in relation to depression, evidencing how much adjusting volume and intensity of PA and practice frequently can influence depressive levels.
