Abstract

Introduction: Sarcopenia is characterized by decreased strength and muscle mass and may be associated with increased toxicity during cancer treatment. Aims: Provide evidence of the presence of sarcopenia, changes in muscle composition and strength in breast cancer patients. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative review that included research carried out with human beings, indexed in Pubmed, Academic Google and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) databases. After applying the inclusion criteria and reading the full texts, sixteen studies were selected for this review. Results: Thirteen studies reported changes in body composition consisting of increased fat mass and/or adiposity (six studies), decreased lean mass and/or fat-free mass (six studies) and increased body weight and/or presence of overweight and obesity (eight studies). Three studies evaluated muscle strength, all recording its decrease during and after cancer treatment. There were five studies that analyzed the presence of sarcopenia in participants with breast cancer, four of them reported the presence of this condition in the sample, being associated with longer disease-free survival in one study. Conclusions: The analysis of the studies included in this review indicates unfavorable changes regarding the presence of sarcopenia, body composition and muscle strength. Knowledge of these changes can foster prevention and health promotion actions for patients with breast cancer.
