Characteristics involving the process of weight loss in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (pos): a literature review
Abstract
Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (POS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in women. Although POS is not considered completely reversible, several strategies can reduce the frequency or intensity of symptoms, and nutrition is one of the mainstays of treatment. Objective: To analyze the characteristics that involve the weight loss process in POS women. Materials and methods: This is a narrative literature review. The searches were based on the research question: "What are the effects generated by POS and how effective are non-pharmacological weight loss strategies?" Results: Common signs and symptoms of POS are associated with both reproductive and metabolic factors, as POS interferes with the metabolism of sex steroids, gonadotropins and insulin. Being overweight is one of the most common effects. Lifestyle modifications have been a well-accepted alternative for the treatment of POS. Dietary changes, changes in physical activity level, and behavioral interventions are recommended as first-line treatment. Conclusion: Many weight loss programs are proposed for the management of POS, but ideal methods for achieving recommended weight loss are lacking. What is known is that weight reduction improves the signs and symptoms as well as the prognosis of the disease.
