Disordered eating attitudes in adolescent athletes
Abstract
Introduction: Disordered eating is a significant risk factor for the development of eating disorders in athletes. Aim: Evaluate the etiological and risk factors for disordered eating attitudes in adolescent athletes. Methods: A literature review of the English and Portuguese language was performed using the Pubmed and Lilacs databases to retrieve eligible studies published from 2015 to 2020. Using the Decs / Mesh indexed descriptors, in their Portuguese and English versions based on the descriptors: “adolescent /” “eating behavior”. And descriptors that are not indexed, but that are directly related to the theme, namely: “athlete”, “eating disorders” and “disordered eating attitudes”. Results: We identified seven studies that met the inclusion criteria and that made up the final synthesis. The age of the population ranged from 11 to 19 years, 15 etiological factors related to attitudes of disordered eating emerged. The studies had different assessments in relation to the type of sport, modalities of participation and also the characteristic by type of weight sensitivity in relation to the sport practiced. Conclusion: The present review reveals that disordered eating attitudes have body dissatisfaction, being female and involved in sports that emphasize body weight control as etiological factors. Further prospective studies are needed to ascertain the directions in the relationship between disordered eating in adolescents and the sports environment.
