Evaluation of the perception and satisfaction of the body image of nursing students
Abstract
Introduction: conflicts regarding body image increase among young people and university students. Objective: to evaluate the perception and satisfaction with body image in nursing students. Materials and methods: 75 university students of both sexes aged 18 to 51 years were obtained. The students' Body Mass Index (BMI) was archived and the following instruments for assessing perception and satisfaction of body image were: Silhouettes Scale and Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ). Results: according to the BMI classification, 9.3% of the sample was malnourished, 57.3% eutrophic, 20% overweight and 13.3% with obesity. There was 96% inaccuracy and 81.4% dissatisfaction with body image when using a Scale of Silhouettes. BSQ's responses revealed discontent and concern for fitness. Conclusion: the present study found inaccuracy and dissatisfaction in body image. The Scale of Silhouettes was shown to be more sensitive to the distortion of body image, however the combination of instruments makes it possible to understand specific information about the concern with body shape.
