Meat and milk consumption are related to the presence of serious obesity in children and adolescents with overweight
Abstract
Introduction: Obesity is closely linked to several deadly diseases and chronic health problems, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and mental health. The brazilian adolescents' food consumption can be characterized by the presence of healthy eating markers, high consumption of beans and vegetables, as unhealthy eating markers, high consumption of treats and ultra-processed salty foods. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze food intake about children and adolescents with overweight and obesity based on Food Guides for a Brazilian population. Materials and Methods: The study is of the analytical cross-sectional type, with a quantitative approach. The food consumption was analyzed from the 24-h recall, using the food guidelines of the Food Guides (2006 and 2014). Food consumption was compared between the groups studied (group without severe obesity - OB; and with severe obesity - OG). Statistical analysis was used in the Mann - Whitney test, adopting a level of significance of 5%. Results and Discussion: The sample showed low consumption of In natura (10.22%) and processed foods (11.08%), with the largest caloric contribution coming from minimally processed foods (48.57%), followed by ultra-processed (21, 59%). Although the recommendations are met when consuming most minimally processed foods, most of this consumption comes from eating meat. Conclusion: the sample studied showed that the consumption of meat and milk has an impact on the presence of severe obesity and the average intake of ultra-processed foods was twice that of In natura foods.
