Abstract

A large supply of food and sedentary lifestyle have led humanity to call obesity a pandemic. The excess of fat, mainly in the abdominal region, is linked to risk factors for development of cerebral vascular accident (CVA). This article aimed to review the scientific literature about the studies on the influence of visceral fat and the risk of developing stroke. The fat is just stored energy function. Several scientific evidence suggests that adipose tissue is an endocrine organ capable of synthesizing substances such as leptin, able to influence the metabolism. Visceral fat in overweight increases the risk for stroke and other comorbidities associated with excess body weight. Body Mass Index (BMI), the Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) and Waist Circumference (WC), anthropometric measures are used in various studies analyzed to demonstrate the relationship of visceral fat and risk for stroke. Obesity increases the risk for double occurrence of a stroke. Given recent evidence, it seems that there is an association between visceral fat and the risk of a stroke occur in women and men.
