Systematic review about the influence of chocolate, tea, red wine and coffee on cardiovascular health

Abstract

There were selected 23 articles published between 1981 and 2006 found online at the American Heart Association (AHA) website about the ingestion of coffee, Camélia sinensis tea, chocolate and red wine or grape. They were analyzed to determine their influence on human health. Most individuals were women (63%). Sixteen occurrences (69.56%) came up with positive effects while 4 occurrences (17.34%) of negative results and seven times (30.43%) we had no effect on health by the ingestion of these foods. Some studies got either positive and negative effects depending on the quantity and/or frequency of food intake. Other articles got positive and no effect on the same study. Chocolate had the greater result on human health with improvement on lipid levels and lowered LDL oxidation (31.25%). Coffee and red wine/grapes had good results as well in 25% of the cases each as they improved vasodilatation, decreased the platelet aggregation and triglycerides, and had stimulatory effects on Central Nervous System (CNS). The studies that used tea 18.75% improved vasomotor function, had a reduction in body weight and waist circumference and lowered LDL cholesterol. Some other studies must establish the real effects but according to this analysis it is valid to add in the diet antioxidant rich foods as they have a protective and positive effect on human health.
