Auriculotherapy in the treatment of obesity: a literature review
Abstract
Obesity is a chronic syndrome whose main characteristic is the excessive accumulation of adipose tissue in different regions of the body. This accumulation causes physiological and metabolic changes that can lead to damage to the health and quality of life of individuals with this syndrome. Traditional Chinese medicine is an ancient therapy, with records of its appearance before Christ, originating in China. It has enormous efficacy in the treatment of several syndromes, including obesity. Such therapy is based on the use of the concepts of organs and viscera, yin yang, channels and collaterals and Qi for the diagnosis and treatment of the referred energy syndromes. TCM acts on obesity because it has an anti-inflammatory, sedative and neuroendocrine stimulating effect. Among its therapies is auriculotherapy, a technique that treats the body as a whole using reflex points located in the ear. In this perspective, this research aimed to review the literature looking for original articles in which auriculotherapy was used as an alternative to aid in weight reduction in obese individuals in order to assess the effectiveness of the therapy as well as to identify the possible mechanisms by which auriculotherapy influences obesity reduction. It is possible to observe great results with regard to the reduction of anthropometric indices of obese individuals, with a greater adhesion of the female public in the practice of therapy, concluding that the technique is shown as an important aid tool in the treatment of obesity.
