Metabolic syndrome in patients attended in an outlet of cardiology in Boa Vista-RR
Abstract
Introduction: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus development. When already associated with heart disease, it is also responsible for a worse prognosis and high morbidity and mortality. Objective: Identify and characterize patients treated in a private cardiology clinic in Boa Vista-RR possibly affected by MetS. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional and documentary study with a sample of 92 patients undergoing cardiological follow-up from August 2017 to July 2018 in Boa Vista, Roraima. The variables evaluated were: sex, age, skin color, smoking, anthropometric data (weight, height, BMI (weight (kg) / height2) and waist circumference), blood pressure, blood glucose, triglycerides, HDL and metabolic syndrome. Results: The MetS was diagnosed in 52.17% of the patients, with 68.75% of the patients being female. There was also a marginally significant 20% increase in the likelihood of women developing MetS compared to men (p<0.07). As for blood pressure, 31.52% were pre-hypertensive and 47.82% were hypertensive in some degree. Of the total number of patients, 44.56% were overweight and 34.77% were obese in some degree. In addition, 75% had high waist circumference. Conclusion: The profile of the patients evaluated was female, over 40 years old, with overweight or obesity, high waist circumference and high blood pressure. The diagnosis of MS was observed in more than half of the patients, and as it is very associated with poor lifestyle habits, a better prognosis for these patients in cardiological care could be achieved with multiprofessional follow-up that would lead to effective changes in lifestyle.
