Quantity and quality of carbohydrate in the diet of women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Abstract
Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that can be accompanied by obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Food inadequacy is one of the factors that negatively interferes with these metabolic changes. Objective: To evaluate food consumption and the degree of processing of carbohydrate source foods in women with PCOS. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional study, in which two 24-hour recall were applied and anthropometry was performed on 35 women with PCOS, in Natal-RN. Food and dietary consumption data were analyzed using the DietSmart® 2.0 software. The carbohydrate source foods were classified according to the amount of carbohydrates and fibers and their degree of processing. Results: The average age of the participants was 27 (6.91) years, with average anthropometric parameters demonstrating obesity and increased risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases. The daily intake of energy, carbohydrates and dietary fiber was 1764 (480.2) kilocalories, 229 (22.4) grams and 15.88 (2.8) grams, respectively. It was observed that 66% of the carbohydrate source foods consumed were processed or ultra-processed and 64.3% had medium or high glycemic load. Conclusion: The quantitative consumption of carbohydrates was below the daily recommendation; however, most source foods were processed and ultra-processed and with a predominance of carbohydrate consumption with medium or high GC, reinforcing that the quality of this macronutrient should be considered.
