Characterization of the elderly care at a geriatric clinic in Cascavel - Paraná and the benefits of individualized nutritional intervention
Abstract
Introduction: With senescence, some precautions must be adopted, among which is the individualized nutritional intervention that identifies deficiencies and excesses, readjusting them to vital needs of elderly. Objectives: To characterize the elderly who receive regular care at a Geriatrics Clinic in the city of Cascavel-PR; Analyze possible predictive variables that characterize the risk for the development of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the elderly; Looking back on how individualized nutritional intervention has contributed to the prevention or improvement of NCDs. Materials and Methods Fifty elderly patients (68%; n = 34 women and 32%; n = 16 men) seen between August 2017 and July 2019 were analyzed, characterizing them from clinical records. The data were analyzed in a descriptive and inferential manner. Results: They were classified as overweight or obese (56%; n = 28), with diabetes mellitus (DM, 42%; n = 21) and with arterial hypertension (SAH, 70%, n = 35). The glycated hemoglobin (HG) variable was considered a predictive variable for the development of DM in the elderly (exp (b): 25.07, 95% CI: 3.24; 193.82, P <0.05), but none of the variables predisposed to the development of SAH or obesity. And the individualized nutritional intervention, during the 16-week period, was effective for the loss of body weight and for the reduction of the HG and plasma LDL concentration of the elderly (P <0.05). Conclusion: The main diseases that affect the elderly evaluated are obesity, SAH and DM. And the HG was a predictive factor for the development of DM and the individualized nutritional intervention helped to reduce the risk factors that contribute to NCDs in elderly.
