Abstract

Obesity is disease that affects a significant part of the world population and, for this health implications, has been the focus of numerous researches, as it is associated with the main causes of preventable diseases. This study aims to investigate pre/postoperative cortisol levels in obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery. This research a review, basead on a search of eletronic databases, such as PubMed, Lilacs and Scielo, where observational studies and / or clinical trials in the Portuguese and English languages, published in the last 10 years were selected. The following search strategies were used: 1) Cortisol and bariatric sugery; 2) corticosteroid and bariatric surgery; 3) cortisol and weight loss; 4) stress and bariatric surgery. As a result of this research, five authors fit the objectives of this review, having as results found the fact that all articles researched agree that obesity is treated as a worldwide problem, being related to stress that can, in turn, be measured by cortisol levels in the human body. One of the most enduring and effective treatments for morbid obesity is bariatric surgery and several studies control the patient's pre- and post-surgery cortisol levels to measure their stress level, correlating it with weight loss. Despite the strong association between high cortisol levels and obesity, some studies show that cortisol levels did not change significantly after bariatric surgery and consequent weight loss. Our study confirms the need for further research to prove the relationship between weight loss and significant decrease in cortisol levels in the human body, thus serving as a basis for future research.
