Bariatric surgery and bulimia nervosa
Abstract
Introduction: This study deals with the relation between bariatric surgery and the development of bulimia nervosa. Objective: The aim of this work is to quantify whether bariatric surgery represents a risky factor to the occurrence of bulimia nervosa. Material and method: Sixteen obese women who were submitted to bariatric surgery and attended the support’s meeting between november 2007 to april 2008, were analyzed. The instrument used to investigate the presence of bulimic behavior and its gravity was Bulimic Investigatory Test of Edinburg (BITE). Results: The results showed that 56,25% of the patients presented scores above the normal level (‹ 10). From those, 18,75% presented non-usual feeding standard ( between 10 and 14) and 31,25% were included in the subclinic group (between 15 and 19). It was found out only one case with a score higher than 20, pointing to a possibility of development of this illness. With respect to the seriousness of this disorder, scores above 5 were considered significant, having been found only one case. Conclusion: Taking into consideration the achieved result in this study, bariatric surgery showed not to be a risk factor for the development of bulimia nervosa.
