Weight loss strategies before bariatric surgery
Abstract
Introduction: Patients with obesity look for weight reduction through different treatments, including bariatric surgery, but this strategy usually does not occur without a previous history. Objective: To describe the strategies for weight loss used for obese patients referred to bariatric surgery. Method: Descriptive research with candidates for bariatric surgery at an obesity center. Individuals aged ≥ 18 years with BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 were included and excluding those with heart failure, hepatic, pancreatic, renal, respiratory, consumptive disease, decompensated thyroid dysfunction and patients with incomplete data on weight loss strategies. The data were collected in the medical records and in a self-administered questionnaire. The factors associated with the strategies considered in this study were: age, sex, BMI, schooling, beginning of obesity and marital status. Results: A total of 705 pacientes were studied, with a mean (standard deviation) of 36,4 (10,0) years, with BMI ≥ 40,0 kg/m2 and 71,1% female. The most used weight loss strategies were diet (84,5%), physical activity (80,6%) followed by medication (68,7%). The gender, the beginning of obesity, and level of schooling influenced both the choice and the number of weight loss strategies. Already, age and marital status interfered only in the selection of strategies. Conclusion: The patients had an extensive historic of weight loss strategies and that both the choice and the quantity of strategies varies according to the demographic variables studied.
