Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the effect of a nutrition education program on risk factors for cardiovascular disease in elderly diabetics. Materials and Method: participated this study 20 elderly women with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus randomized divided into two groups, a group no nutritional education (GNE) and nutritional education group (NEG). Daily caloric intake, weight body, perimeters measurements of central and overall adiposity, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and triglycerides concentrations were evaluated at the beginning and in the final of 12 weeks of the program. Results: the results showed that the nutrition education program decreased the daily caloric intake, body weight, central and overall adiposity in the NEG group compared to GNE group (p<0.01). The systolic and diastolic blood pressure did not change after 12 weeks of program between GNE and NEG groups (p>0.05). In the comparison of blood biochemical parameters between groups, NEG group decreased fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) concentrations compared to GNE group after 12 weeks of program (p<0.01). Conclusion: in conclusion, nutrition education program decreased the body adiposity and changed the blood biochemical parameters, reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease in elderly women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
