Evaluation of the total and segmental body composition of students in the Nutrition course by dual X-ray absorptiometry
Abstract
Introduction: University students in the nutrition course, despite having access to technical scientific knowledge about healthy eating, are also susceptible to an inadequate dietary practice, which reflects in their body composition. Objective: Evaluate the total and segmental body composition of students in the nutrition course at a private university in the city of São Paulo using the DEXA - dual X-ray absorptiometry. Materials and Métodos: This is a cross-sectional study, carried out with 21 nutrition students of both sexes, from a private university in São Paulo. For the assessment of body composition, the equipment of densitometry DEXA dual X-ray absorptiometry, model Lunar Prodigy Advance and GE Healthcare brand was used. Fat mass and lean tissue were evaluated for the entire body and specific regions (trunk and upper and lower limbs). Results: 21 students were evaluated, aged between 19 and 52 years old, being 17 (81%) female and four male (19%). An average BMI value was observed in women of 24.13 ± 4.38 Kg / m2, and in men of 27.31 ± 4.33 Kg / m2. As for the percentage of total body fat, the average among men was 26.63 ± 8.38%, and 32.63 ± 8.24% among women. According to the normality criteria proposed by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 89.47% (n=17) of the students presented percentiles above the reference. Conclusion: Although most of the students (71.42%) were classified as eutrophic, the majority (89.47%) presented percentiles above the average, according to DEXA.
